Why are we the Kids’ choice for Pediatric Dentistry?

What better way to be the Kids’ Choice dentist than to recruit kids to help design the experience. Starting from the name and logo of the practice, Dr. Erin McGrath enlisted the help of her children to create the ultimate experience for visits to the dentist. The practice logo was hand drawn by Dr. Erin’s two sons. She had her two daughters help pick out the colors for the rooms along with the fun wall decor. She even added a cool chalkboard wall inspired by her 2 year old son’s love of chalking.

From the moment the kids walk into the waiting area, there are activities and games to play, TV’s in each room to enjoy watching their favorite show or movie and even a special prize area to pick from before leaving. From front to back, start to finish, everything in the office has been kid approved! Dr. Erin understands that every child is unique and has different needs. She treats every child as if they were one of her own.

Sealants

A sealant is a protective coating painted on the grooves of the teeth to prevent bacteria from traveling down these grooves and causing cavities. Even with excellent home care and diet cavities can still form because the toothbrush bristles can not clean all the way down in the deep grooves. Studies have shown that sealants can prevent cavities 80% of the time.

Sedation Dentistry

Our goal is for every child to have a pleasant, stress-free experience while receiving dental work. We have the ability to use different treatment modalities to minimize anxiety and fear while promoting a positive experience for your child.

Sedation Dentistry - Nitrous oxide

Nitrous oxide, also known as “Laughing Gas,” is our mildest form of sedation. Your child will breathe in a mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide which will help to reduce their anxiety.

Sedation Dentistry - Oral Conscious sedation

Oral Conscious sedation is a form of moderate sedation for young and very apprehensive patients. Your child will drink medication which we often call “Giggle Juice.” About 30 minutes after drinking the medication, we will bring your child back to the treatment room and complete any necessary treatment. Your child will be awake and breathing on their own during this time, but much more relaxed and sleepy.

Sedation Dentistry - General anesthesia

General anesthesia is completed in the operating room. A medical doctor will be providing general anesthesia in a hospital or surgical center setting. After your child is asleep, new x-rays are taken along with a definitive exam to determine the comprehensive needs of your child. All treatment will be completed while your child is asleep.

Crowns

  • White (Zirconia) crowns
  • Stainless steel (silver) crowns

Root Canals

When cavities grow bigger and reach the nerve of the tooth, a root canal may be needed. Because the enamel (outer shell) of the tooth is much thinner in baby teeth, cavities can grow quicker causing the need for a root canal.

Extractions

An extraction may be indicated if a baby tooth is preventing a permanent tooth from coming in correctly. Sometimes a cavity may be too big to complete a filling or crown on a tooth or the tooth is infected and an extraction may be the best choice of treatment for your child.

Space Maintainers

If a tooth has to be extracted prematurely, it is important to maintain the space so the permanent tooth still has room to erupt properly. If the space is not maintained, the permanent tooth could be impacted or blocked out causing more issues in the future.
